The creature is called an 'Arbiter' - no relation to the critters in the Halo series. It's a hive-mind alien, not really an insect despite the superficial appearance. They're technological, arrogant and utterly without pity and remorse - they're the 'bad guys' from the two novels I've written featuring the Vanguard aliens that mainly feature in my gallery.
